Melbourne’s rich cultural district features numerous art-deco style theatres and galleries – the Capitol Theatre being one of these classic theatres located in the city; featuring early 19th century architecture.
Famous Australian designer Walter Burley Griffin designed this beautiful theatre and was opened on the November 7, 1924. Since then, the theatre has gone through a number of major changes.
The Capitol Theatre Melbourne, Parking & Seating Plan
After its initial renovations, the theatre reopened in 1965 and Melbournians loved the new concept of a shopping mall inside the theatre arena. The theatre changed its management in 1987 and later was closed again in 1997 for more renovations. In the early 2000’s, the Capitol Theatre was reopened for a special screening.
Today, the iconic Capitol Theatre screens mainstream films, art house films and documentaries, as well as playing host to major events – predominantly, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Free public tours are offered at this iconic theatre on the third Thursday of every month. Guests are also welcome to explore the onsite shopping arcade.
