Birrarung Marr

Birrarung Marr is another newly established park close to the Melbourne CBD – nestled on the northern banks of the Yarra River that adjoins Federation Square.

Birrarung Marr was opened to the public back in 2002 and was named after the Wurundjeri people and according to their language; Birrarung Marr means ‘side of a river’.

Visitors often come here to walk, jog and play within the serene parkland setting. Birrarung Marr is not just an ordinary park, the park’s Birrarung William community celebrates the cultural diversity of Victoria and promotes the native indigenous culture here. This group takes part in several public events that highlight Australia’s native culture through public artworks and story demonstrations.

The park’s unique design denotes indigenous culture and its significance to the country. Within the park, you’ll notice a winding and textured pathway that relates to the eel – one of the chief food items of the native indigenous people of Victoria. There are also a number of large rocks with traditional drawings all across this beautiful park. Furthermore, there is also a semi-circle of metal shields that represent the five groups of the Wurundjeri’s Kulin Nation.

This 8-hectare lush parkland is also home to some unique sculptures. The park’s outer wall features beautiful traditional works of the indigenous people. Also, there is an ArtPlay building that features audio recordings of indigenous people informing visitors about their native traditions.

The park is a perfect destination for those with an interest in learning more about the native Wurundjeri people of Victoria.

    • Hi Sandra,

Depending on the size of your bus, Federation Square parking is probably the best option due to its proximity and accessibility to Birrarung Marr.

The Fed Square website states: “There are accessible car parks located on each level of the Fed Square Car Park, in close proximity to the lifts. The height restriction for vehicles is 2.1 metres. Should your vehicle exceed this accessible height car park then please contact us on (03) 9655 1900 and we will assist in providing an alternative arrangement.”

I suggest giving them a call and they should be able to give you some advice if you can advise them the size of your bus. I would also maybe ask them if there are discounted parking rates for the time that you will be attending, as the casual fee can get quite expensive if attending during a weekday.

      Regards,
      Jess
