The Metropolitan Ring Road, also known as the M80 Ring road, is a large freeway in Northern Melbourne which links the northern part of the city to Eastern and Western suburbs.
The Metropolitan Ring Road turns into the Western Ring Road between Thomastown and Campbellfield and connects the following freeways: the Tullamarine Freeway, the Calder Freeway and the Hume Freeway as well as the Western Highway and the Princes Freeway.

Typically, traffic reports about the Metropolitan Ring Road are highlighted on televised news coverages as well as radio stations which keeps motorists aware of any traffic incidents ahead of time. The Metropolitan Ring road also has traffic cameras which monitor the traffic situation on a daily basis.
Due to the convenience of the freeway, the area around Ring Road has developed remarkably. This has made it easy to get accommodation close to the Ring road. For instance, the Greensborough Motor Inn is conveniently located about 3 kilometres from the end of M80, offering modest accommodation at a cheap price. Alternatively, head to the Bell Motor Inn or Mahoneys Motor Inn, both of which are ideal for the corporate traveller.
The Metropolitan Ring Road is a fundamental part of Melbourne’s transport infrastructure which will save travellers lots of time when making their way throughout the western suburbs.
Are there any tolls on the M80 from Tullamarine to Princes Highway then into the city ?
Hi Peter,
Looking at Google Maps, you can in fact avoid any tolls if you take the Western Ring Road and then the West gate Freeway.
The only downside to driving this route is that rather than the 22-35 mins and 19.5km drive it would be using Citylink, it would be be 35-45 mins and 37km.
Both roads can suffer tremendous traffic jams during peak times, so it would be worth checking Google Maps before you depart – seeing if it’s worth avoiding the tolls – the 24 Hour Tulla Pass, which takes you as far as Flemington road, may be worth the $6.30.
Thanks
Michael
Do I have to pay a toll on the ring road travelling West between Greensborough Road, and Plenty Road ?
Hi Merv,
No, there is no toll here.
