Home to dozens of Australian endangered species, the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park is an amazing getaway located in the South East of Melbourne.

Just an hour’s drive from Melbourne, the conservation park was inspired by Gerald Durrell, a nature enthusiast from Britain. The 25-acre park has more than 50 species native to Australia. These include koalas, wallabies and kangaroos, amongst many other species. The bushland offers a natural habitat for these species.

Due to species endangerment, some species like the bush thick-knees birds are kept in large and natural enclosures to preserve their species for future generations. Other species preserved at Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park include the following: pademelons, squirrel gliders, the famed Tasmanian Devils as well as the Southern Bettongs.

These efforts have placed the park squarely in the global front, with many awards given to the park for their conservation practices.

The wetlands within the park are home to numerous bird species, making it a paradise for bird watchers. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the conservation park is the lantern-lit night tours where you will be shown a range of animals by an experienced guide.

Nocturnal birds and animals come alive at dusk and this allows visitors to watch the animals forage in their natural habitat. Bookings are essential as there are limited places.

For a truly unique experience, visitors should book a close encounter tour where you can hold a koala, snake or owl. This is certainly the best way for visitors to get up and close with Australia’s unique wildlife. Bookings are essential as encounters often book out early.

The animal keepers also do keeper talks throughout the day, check the park’s schedule for keeper talk times and locations.
